CT attenuation thresholds were -29 to 150 HU for skeletal muscle, -190 to -30 HU for subcutaneous adipose tissue, and -50 to -150 HU for visceral adipose tissue. Measurement of skeletal muscle area (SMA, cm 2), SMD (Hounsfield unit ), visceral fat area (VFA, cm 2), and subcutaneous fat area (SFA, cm 2) was performed at the axial slice nearest to the lower edge of each lumbar vertebral body by applying predefined radiation attenuation.
